Shadow Mania is short, intense and fleeting. Violin and cello continually shadow one another: a gesture launched by one instrument returns in the other as an echo, a disturbance or a sudden change of direction. Its opening is marked ‘Manic, explosive’, but the piece does not remain in a single fevered state. The two players alternate between driving figuration, held pressure and moments of exposed lyricism, as though each passing character might become the centre of a much longer story.
Page 2 shows how much of that story is compressed into the duet. A high violin outburst rises above the cello’s quick chromatic line; almost at once, the texture relaxes into a quieter dolce exchange. It darkens again, the violin turning towards sul ponticello while the cello gathers force beneath it. Even the indication of a ‘final cadence’ arrives amid material still in motion. The work’s two minutes contain the beginnings, reversals and afterimages of a larger drama without needing to extend its duration.
