Programme note

Nuclei was commissioned by Birmingham Contemporary Music Group for the Birmingham Schools’ Recorder Sinfonia as part of its Flourish! project. With approximately two minutes in which to reveal the ensemble’s particular sound, the composer imagined the piece as a journey through a cell: entering through its outer wall, moving towards an eccentric inner body, then accelerating out through the opposite side. The biological image gives the miniature a lucid dramatic contour, but the music never treats its young performers as though they require a diluted musical language. Its accessibility lies in vivid physical actions and clear transformations; its harmony, texture and instrumental expression remain fully contemporary.

The opening, marked ‘Distant’, forms a permeable membrane from widely separated recorder tones. Notes arrive with almost no articulation, while extremely rapid re-articulations make otherwise stable pitches tremble at their edges. This apparent calm is soon pierced by free chromatic runs distributed through the ensemble. Marked agitato yet very quiet, these streams need not finish together and allow players to breathe independently. The journey inward is therefore heard not as one unanimous descent but as many narrow trajectories crossing the same boundary at slightly different speeds.

Inside the cell, linear motion slows into suspended tones, diaphragm pulsations, trills and ad-libitum pitchless tongue pizzicati. Breath becomes pulse; pitch becomes percussion; a fragile sonority gradually acquires tactile pressure. From this unstable interior, the nucleus emerges as quirky, densely interlocked melodic and harmonic writing. Angular fragments and triplet cells ricochet among soprano, alto, tenor, bass and contrabass recorders, while lower voices supply weight only to have that hierarchy immediately displaced. The ensemble’s youthful identity coexists with sharp chromaticism, restless counterpoint and a sophisticated play of register and colour.

The rapid material eventually returns transformed into outward propulsion. Repeated-note strands migrate from section to section while long tones stretch across them, producing the impression of rotation rather than a single linear run. At the close, coordinated notation opens into collective freedom: each player chooses and may change a trill pitch, breathing independently at full force. The result is not a tidy cadence but a brilliant, turbulent cloud—the ‘whirlwind of sound’ imagined in the original programme note. Having entered through a distant membrane and encountered the nucleus as concentrated personality, the ensemble exits by becoming a living field whose exact surface cannot be repeated.
