Melody III

Programme note

Melody III begins with the timbral blending of flute, clarinet and piano through the expressive possibilities of heterophonic lines. Contours overlap, shadow and interrupt one another, sometimes coalescing into a common utterance and sometimes exposing the difference between breath, reed and struck resonance. The opening establishes this unstable poise immediately, setting cantabile wind phrases against a brilliant, piercing piano sonority whose resonance is allowed to linger.

From this shared line, the piece develops a life of its own. Bisbigliando and key trills, buzzing fingering changes, lip glissandi and rearticulated tones loosen pitch into timbre; elastic tempi and irregular metres cause gestures to stretch, recoil or arrive from different temporal directions. Calm, reverberant spans are infiltrated by mischievous, weighty and lightly jazzy material. Expressivity and peculiarity do not form separate episodes: each keeps emerging from the other as the trio repeatedly finds and loses a common physiological time.

Near the end, flute and clarinet unexpectedly assume a plainchant-like manner. The stylistic turn is striking because it is neither prepared as quotation nor made to resolve the surrounding language: a lucid vocal contour appears inside the same unstable field, briefly suggesting ritual or remembrance before being absorbed back into the texture. At the close, the tempo falls and the piano is marked ppp, ‘like a mist’. Repeated cells hover beneath quiet wind figures until melody no longer seems projected but half-visible through resonance. The work ends not by closing its argument, but by allowing its materials to become atmospheric.
