Programme note

Aperture imagines musical form as the opening of a camera lens. The work begins at an extremely high, unspecified point on the cello’s fingerboard: an almost closed aperture through which very little sound or light can enter. From there, one continuous trajectory draws the instrument downwards until it reaches its lowest open string. Register becomes both space and exposure; as the lens opens, the cello’s body is progressively revealed.

The descent is continually disturbed without ever being abandoned. Frantic upward-and-backward glissandi, changing bow pressure, tremolo, scratch tone and sudden dynamic extremes interrupt the surface, yet each disruption returns at a lower point on the fingerboard. The listener is asked to perceive these local convulsions inside a much slower gravitational line. What appears momentarily to resist the descent therefore makes its direction more palpable.

The score’s single-page form allows the entire aperture to remain visible at once. Its upper span compresses volatile high-register pressure into measured seconds; the lower system stretches the final lowering across a longer field as tremolo separates into articulated strokes and bow pressure accumulates. At the bottom, the lens is fully open. The arrival on the cello’s lowest pitch is not quiet illumination but saturation: maximum resonance, friction and physical exposure.
