About the work

Where Death Drive: Streams treats repetition as two flickering polarities continually aligning and slipping apart, Death Drive: Loading Screens imagines death as a series of waiting rooms. Two vibraphones pass through eleven compact cells, each counted many times and each experienced as a provisional chamber rather than a step towards conventional arrival. Sparse attacks, chords and silences initially administer time at the threshold of audibility; waiting is made concrete through counting.
The entire score occupies a single page. This compression is integral to the work’s intensity: both players hold its complete trajectory in view while sustaining cells of eleven, twenty-two, thirty, forty and fifty repetitions. Although the notation appears direct, it contains a shifting interior life. Ad libitum choices between chord tones, first-time-only attacks, uneven tremolos, changing pedal and the minute discrepancies produced by repeated human actions generate micro-rhythmic permutations that the page can imply but never fully display. The score may be expanded by doubling or tripling every repeat count, enlarging the architecture without changing its proportions.
Across the sequence, suspension becomes increasingly physical. The pulse is asked to acquire a drunken 2/4 feel; tremolos slow unevenly at points of transition; resonance begins to gather around events that had seemed self-contained. In the final waiting room, fifty repetitions turn stasis into acceleration. Two slow, uneven tremolos grow towards extremely fast fluttering as dynamic, pedal and resonance rise together to FFF. What began as the quiet administration of time ends as a nauseating whirlpool: waiting converted into vibration, and vibration into an immense residue that continues after the players’ final action.
