Death Drive: Streams

Death Drive: Streams belongs to Death Drive, a series of works meditating on what Lacan calls the death drive: the repetitive circuit that persists beyond the fulfilment of an aim. Here two pianos become flickering polarities, moving at the quietest dynamics. Their repetitions narrow attention towards a single heightened point, opening a poetic perspective on death not as blunt termination, but as an attraction exercised through recurrence, suspension and the compulsion to begin again.

Pulse emerges less as metre than vibration, clearing away heavy matter. The pianos initially share chordal pulses, but dynamic phasing disturbs their agreement; one body steadies as the other stutters, accelerates, rests or is swallowed by its own resonance. Boxed loops are not simply repeated. Individual pitches and chords act as hinges that trigger new streams, transferring the direction of the form from one player to the other almost imperceptibly, while long expanses of near-silence allow a single entry to catch the ear.

Late in the work, dyads become triads and repeated attacks gain brilliance without losing delicacy. The players move independently between secco staccatissimo and pedalled resonance, producing what the score calls ‘shimmering and pulsating light’. Having repeatedly found and lost a common pulse, they enter a long, coordinated slowing: synchrony progressively becomes impossible, yet they continue straining towards it. Death Drive: Streams therefore does not close by exhausting repetition. It suspends two bodies inside the paradox of a shared ending pursued through continual return.
