Study for Brass Quintet

Programme note

Study for Brass Quintet sets five players in a volatile negotiation between coordinated gesture and individual agency. Its opening belongs to the two trumpets: clipped, high-pressure figures are thrown into a field measured in approximate five-second spans, while horn, trombone and tuba enter as weight, afterimage and interruption. Fully notated attacks repeatedly open into pitch- and register-focused improvisation, so that pauses, re-entries and overlaps remain alive within a precisely shaped temporal frame.

As the work unfolds, energy migrates down through the ensemble. Mouthpiece clicks, mute changes, valve tremoli, articulated glissandi, microtonal bends and rapid slide gestures destabilise conventional brass sonority. The texture alternately thickens into frantic stratification and contracts into duologues and three-part melodic counterpoint, passing between aggression, warmth, virtuosity and sombre restraint. A brief moment of synchronised trumpet writing near the end feels less like resolution than a temporary locking of currents.

The closing section returns the whole quintet to a common action—fast, aggressive reiteration—but allows each player to decay independently. Repetitions grow quieter and more widely spaced until the ensemble disappears into silence. The work’s drama therefore moves not towards a final chord, but from collective pressure into individual dissolution.
