Improv 1 begins with a single recorded piano improvisation. The performance is treated as a reservoir: fragments are extracted in Ableton Live, layered, displaced and transformed through electronic effects.
The original improvisation and its processed doubles remain recognisably related, creating a dialogue in which the same material reappears in different acoustic states. The work listens back into its own performance, allowing gesture, resonance and residue to answer their source.
Improv 1 also marks the composer’s first foray into the deliberately exposed electronic imitation later expanded in Leakage. Raw, glitch-prone transformations and 8-bit inflections allow the processing to point towards acoustic timbre without fully reproducing it. The audible gap between source and copy becomes part of the music’s grain: a trace of the mechanism through which the improvisation is recalled, multiplied and returned.
