Tendrils and Tremors

Programme note

Tendrils and Tremors is a solo violin suite concerned with instability, delicacy, physical tension, and continuous transformation. The work was written with the great melodic history of the solo violin in mind — from Bach’s suites and partitas, through Ysaÿe’s sonatas, to Bartók’s Sonata for Solo Violin — while developing a contemporary hybridity of counterpoint and timbral variety.

The music moves between fine, filament-like lines and tremulous, volatile gestures, treating the violin as an instrument capable of suggesting many simultaneous voices, textures, and states of motion. Across the suite, tendril-like melodic materials curl outward into more forceful eruptions, while tremors disturb and energise the surface through bow colour, harmonics, glissandi, tremulous articulations, and subtle timbral inflections.

Rather than treating melody, counterpoint, and colour as separate concerns, Tendrils and Tremors binds them together: line becomes texture, texture becomes gesture, and gesture becomes form. The piece unfolds as a shifting landscape of tension, growth, rupture, ferocity, and quiet dissolution.
