Crosscurrents

Programme note

Crosscurrents explores different kinds of temporality unfolding concurrently. Five instruments move through streams that converge, resist and deflect one another. One may complete an older phrase while another initiates a new current. Elsewhere they briefly share a momentum while occupying different moments of the form. Cadential gestures retain their sense of direction; endings are absorbed into new currents.

Pitch relationships are central to this temporal drama. Tonal implication acts less as a system of resolution than as a field of attraction. Pitches gather into cadential or almost familiar shapes, then pull apart, return altered or redirect the surrounding music. The instruments may meet within a sonority without sharing its destination. At times their trajectories align. Elsewhere they clash while moving in different directions. These crossings suggest relationships in which intimacy, resistance and recognition coexist, each presence altering the other without determining its course.

As the piece unfolds, interruption becomes a current of its own. Pauses appear in increasingly unfamiliar places. Sound may stop without finishing, while gestures continue to exert pressure after they cease to sound. Different characters increasingly coexist as simultaneous states, making the present temporally thick. Towards the end, warmth briefly surfaces but cannot restore the continuity from which the piece began. What remains is a furtive, disembodied residue.
